Note
re Odell & Co Ltd (supplied by Alan Faulkner)
In 1897 Thomas Clayton (1857-1927) took over the
barge business operated by Henry Odell.
Initially the business was continued under the name of Odell & Co
Ltd from 19 Irongate Wharf, Paddington but the
directors’ meetings were held in Birmingham.
About 1911 the company’s name was changed to Thomas Clayton (Paddington)
Ltd and for many years it was run by Alfred Clayton (1875 – 1969), the fourth
son of Thomas’s eldest brother William John Clayton (1855-1920), from an office
in Paddington. The Grand Union Canal Co
purchased the concern on 1st April 1936 at which time the two main
directors, Alfred Clayton and Forrester Clayton (1878-1942), resigned.
